Battery-powered speakers have traditionally involved a compromise: portability and independence from mains power in exchange for the output and sound quality of a conventional professional PA system. That gap has narrowed considerably.

Modern professional battery-powered PA speakers can provide enough output for many applications where running power to a conventional system would be inconvenient, impractical or unnecessary. For Adelaide functions, that creates some genuinely useful possibilities — particularly outdoors, in temporary spaces and in locations where the sound system needs to be positioned away from a convenient power outlet.

What Is a Battery-Powered PA Speaker?

It can also simplify situations where mains power technically exists but getting it to the required speaker position would mean long extension-lead runs or cables crossing areas used by guests.

Removing the power cable does not eliminate every cable from every possible setup — a connected microphone or other wired audio source may still require one — but it can substantially simplify the system.

Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies

Wedding ceremonies are an obvious application.

A ceremony might take place on a lawn, in a garden or in another part of a venue some distance from the reception building. The sound requirements can also be relatively straightforward: microphones for the celebrant and couple, plus music before, during and after the ceremony.

A battery-powered PA can make this type of setup considerably easier because the speaker position does not have to be determined by the location of a power outlet.

For larger weddings or situations requiring higher output, wider coverage or substantial music reproduction, a larger conventional PA system may still be the better choice. The important point is to choose the system around the actual job rather than assuming battery power is automatically the best solution simply because the function is outdoors.

Speeches and Presentations Away From Mains Power

Clear speech does not necessarily require a large sound system.

A portable battery-powered PA can be useful for presentations, announcements, ceremonies, guided activities and other situations where the primary job is making speech intelligible to an audience.

The Everse 12 has a weatherised enclosure and is rated IP43 in the appropriate battery-powered configuration, providing resistance to splashes and light rain. That does not make it an all-weather speaker or mean professional audio equipment should simply be left exposed to bad weather, but it adds useful protection for appropriate outdoor applications.

How Long Does the Battery Last?

Battery life depends heavily on how loudly the system is being operated and what else is drawing power.

Electro-Voice specifies more than 12 hours of operation at an average 100 dB SPL with typical programme material, and more than six hours at maximum output before limiting, under its specified test conditions.

For many ceremonies, presentations and functions, that provides considerably more operating time than is required.

Battery condition and operating circumstances still matter, and powering external devices from the speaker can reduce available runtime.

How Loud Is a Battery-Powered Speaker?

This is where professional battery-powered PA equipment differs substantially from the small rechargeable speakers many people associate with the term.

The Everse 12 uses a 12-inch woofer and 1-inch titanium compression driver and is rated by Electro-Voice for a maximum SPL of 126 dB at one metre, with 100° × 60° coverage.

But maximum SPL is not the same thing as saying one speaker is appropriate for every audience or venue.

Audience size, listening distance, background noise, whether the system is reproducing speech or music, and the required coverage all matter. A battery-powered system should therefore be selected in exactly the same way as any other PA: according to what it actually needs to do.

What About Music and Parties?

The Everse 12 can reproduce music and offers Bluetooth streaming, but the fact that a speaker is capable of playing music does not automatically make it the best PA for a dance floor.

For parties, DJs and music-focused functions where substantial output and low-frequency impact are important, Audio Hire's conventional speaker and subwoofer systems will generally be more appropriate.

Battery-powered PA is most compelling where portability, independence from mains electricity and rapid deployment are important parts of the job.

If mains power is readily available and the priority is maximum output or substantial bass performance, there may be little reason to choose battery power instead.

Can You Use a Wireless Microphone With a Battery Speaker?

Yes.

A wireless microphone system consists of a microphone/transmitter and a receiver. The receiver feeds the audio signal into the PA system.

The Everse 12 includes professional audio inputs and can therefore form part of a wireless microphone setup. It also provides a 12V DC accessory output designed to support compatible wireless microphone receivers, which can make a genuinely cable-light portable system possible with suitable equipment.

This can be particularly useful for ceremonies, speeches and presentations where both portability and freedom of movement matter.

Battery Speaker or Conventional PA?

The choice comes down to the job.

Choose battery-powered PA when access to electricity, portability or cable management is a significant issue.

Choose a conventional powered PA when greater output, broader coverage, substantial low-frequency performance or a larger system is the priority and mains power is readily available.

Neither is universally better. They solve different problems.
