Join a Small Team That Cares About Doing the Job Properly
Audio Hire is looking for experienced sound technicians, production crew and DJs to work with our small Adelaide team on a casual and freelance basis. We’re not a large production company, and we don’t pretend to be. We’re a closely knit business where the people we work with matter. When you’re on a job for Audio Hire, you’re representing our name, looking after our clients and contributing directly to the success of their event.
We’re looking for people who approach that responsibility seriously. Technical ability or DJ skill matters, but so do reliability, flexibility, presentation, judgement and the willingness to take responsibility for doing a job properly. We want to build relationships with people we know we can rely on when suitable work comes up.
Casual Event Work Across Adelaide
Our work varies considerably from one booking to another. For sound technicians and production crew, that can include straightforward PA delivery and setup, corporate functions, weddings, presentations, live music, DJ events and productions requiring an experienced technician to remain on site and operate the system. For DJs, work can include weddings, birthday parties, private celebrations, corporate events, clubs and other functions requiring professional music programming and performance.
Some bookings may involve Audio Hire supplying the complete sound system, while others may involve working with equipment already installed at a venue or equipment supplied by the performer. Because of the nature of events, the hours vary. There can be daytime work, evening bookings, weekends, early starts and late finishes. The amount of work available will vary according to bookings, your availability, your experience and the requirements of individual jobs.
We understand that good freelance technicians and DJs often work with more than one company. That isn’t a problem. We’re looking to build relationships with people we can contact when appropriate work comes up. We don’t expect you to be available for every booking. Once you accept a job, however, we need to know that we can rely on you.
Sound Technicians & Production Crew
We’re interested in sound technicians and production crew with practical experience working with professional audio equipment and live events. Depending on your experience and the booking, work may include transporting equipment, loading into venues, positioning and setting up PA systems, connecting mixing consoles and microphones, running cables safely, testing equipment, completing soundchecks and operating audio during an event.
Some jobs are technically straightforward. Others require considerably more experience, problem solving and judgement. You should have a practical understanding of areas such as signal flow, powered PA systems, microphones, mixing consoles and safe equipment setup. The ability to diagnose straightforward problems calmly and methodically is particularly valuable.
We don’t expect every technician to be suitable for every booking. We match people to work according to their skills, experience and the requirements of the event.
DJs
We’re also interested in hearing from experienced DJs for weddings, private parties, corporate events, clubs and other functions across Adelaide. Different bookings require very different DJs. Someone who specialises in underground electronic music may be perfect for one event, while another booking may require a versatile mobile DJ who is comfortable moving between decades, genres and requests throughout the night. We want to understand what you actually do well. Tell us about the music you play, the kinds of events you’re comfortable working, the DJ equipment you own, the systems you’re experienced using and the way you normally work.
For mobile DJ work, professionalism is just as important as mixing ability. Weddings, corporate functions and private events require someone who can read a room, communicate appropriately with clients and venue staff, respond to requests intelligently and understand that the DJ is part of the overall event rather than the centre of it.
Club and specialist DJs are also encouraged to apply. If your strength is a particular genre, scene, performance style or technical skill, tell us about it.
The Kind of People We Want to Work With
Technical knowledge and performance ability are important, but they aren’t the only things we’re looking for. We want people who are reliable, flexible, diligent, conscientious and well presented. If you say you’ll be somewhere at a particular time, we need to know you’ll be there. If equipment has been entrusted to you, we expect it to be treated carefully. If you’re dealing with one of our clients, we expect you to be friendly, professional and helpful.
We particularly value people who notice things without needing to be told. That might mean spotting a cable that should be tidied, checking a system again before guests arrive, recognising that the music needs to change because the room has changed, or taking a few extra minutes to make sure everything looks professional. Attention to detail matters because clients notice the small things, and so do we. You don’t need a corporate personality and we’re not looking for people who make simple jobs unnecessarily complicated. We want people who are approachable, practical and capable of getting on with the work. Professionalism without ego fits well here.
You’ll Be Representing Audio Hire
For many clients, the person who arrives at their venue is Audio Hire. They may never meet anyone else from the business. That means how you communicate, how you present yourself, how you treat the venue, how you look after equipment and how you respond when something unexpected happens all matter.
We want people we can confidently send to a booking knowing that the client will be looked after properly. Live events inevitably involve unexpected situations. What matters is remaining calm, exercising good judgement, communicating clearly and finding a sensible solution. Our reputation is built one booking at a time. Arriving on time, treating clients and venue staff respectfully, presenting equipment properly and leaving the venue organised are all part of the job. In return, you’ll be working directly with a small business where your contribution is noticed. You’re not simply another name on a large crew list.
Looking After Equipment
We take equipment care seriously. Our speakers, subwoofers, mixers, microphones, DJ equipment, cables, stands and other equipment need to arrive at every booking clean, presentable and working properly, and they need to come back in the same condition.
We’re looking for people who naturally treat equipment carefully rather than people who need to be constantly reminded. That means packing equipment correctly, protecting it during transport, handling cables and connectors properly, keeping equipment clean and reporting any damage or faults promptly. It also means taking pride in how a setup looks once it has been installed. A technically functional setup with messy cables and equipment scattered around the room isn’t finished. If you’re the sort of person who looks after professional equipment as though it were your own, you’ll probably fit in well.
Working With a Small Team
There are advantages to working with a large production company, but that isn’t what Audio Hire is. We can’t offer guaranteed full-time hours or a large organisational structure. What we can offer is casual and freelance work with a small team where people know each other, good work gets noticed and you’re trusted with responsibility as we get to know you. You’ll work across a variety of Adelaide venues and functions and deal directly with the people running the business. As we learn what you’re good at and what kinds of bookings suit you, we’ll have a better understanding of the work we can confidently offer you.
Flexibility works both ways. We understand that technicians, crew and DJs have other commitments and may work elsewhere. Clear communication is what matters. If you’re unavailable, tell us. If you’ve accepted a booking, we’re relying on you to be there and do the job properly.
We’re interested in developing long-term working relationships with good people rather than simply finding somebody to fill the next shift.
Interested in Sound Technician or Production Work?
If you have experience in live sound, event production, PA systems or related technical work, tell us about your experience, the equipment you’re comfortable working with, the jobs you’ve recently worked on and your general availability. You don’t need to write a corporate cover letter. We’d rather hear clearly what you’ve done, what you’re comfortable doing and where your strengths are.
