Audio Hire has standardised its conventional portable PA systems around Electro-Voice speakers. That decision is not based on the idea that one brand is automatically the best choice for every possible application. It is based on having a consistent range of professional powered speakers that covers the types of functions we regularly support around Adelaide, from speeches and presentations through to parties, weddings, DJs and live music.
Using one core speaker family also makes the hire range easier to understand. Rather than offering customers a collection of unrelated speakers from different manufacturers, we can recommend a system according to what the PA actually needs to do. For many functions that begins with a pair of compact full-range speakers. Larger applications can move to more capable 15-inch models, while music-focused systems can add dedicated subwoofers where stronger low-frequency performance is required.
Why We Standardised on Electro-Voice
Consistency matters in a hire business. When speakers from the same professional range are used repeatedly, we become familiar with how they perform, how they should be configured and which applications suit each model. That makes it easier to recommend appropriate systems and to provide customers with straightforward setup guidance.
Electro-Voice also gives us a useful progression within the portable powered-speaker range. The ZLX-12 G2 provides a compact option for many straightforward PA applications, while the EKX-15P provides additional output and a larger 15-inch format for situations where the system needs to work harder. Dedicated EV subwoofers can then extend the system for DJs, dance floors, live music and other applications where low-frequency reproduction becomes important.
That progression means we can scale the system without changing the basic approach every time a customer needs something larger. The equipment remains familiar, the setup logic stays consistent and the customer does not need to navigate a long list of unrelated speaker brands and models.
Powered Speakers Make Portable PA Simpler
Most of Audio Hire's portable Electro-Voice speakers are powered speakers, which means the amplifier is built into the speaker enclosure. For customers hiring a straightforward PA, this removes the need to connect and configure a separate power amplifier.
A typical system can therefore consist of microphones or music sources feeding a mixer where necessary, with the mixer connected directly to the powered speakers. For simpler applications, the inputs built into the speakers may even remove the need for a separate mixer.
This is particularly useful for dry hire because the equipment can remain professional without making the basic system unnecessarily difficult to set up. It also reduces the number of separate components that have to be matched correctly before the system can be used.
Choosing Between the ZLX-12 G2 and EKX-15P
The ZLX-12 G2 and EKX-15P serve different parts of the Audio Hire range rather than simply representing a good speaker and a better speaker. A pair of ZLX-12 G2 speakers is well suited to many functions where speech, presentations, background music and moderate music playback are the main requirements. Their 12-inch format provides a practical balance between portability and professional PA performance, making them useful for smaller functions, presentations, ceremonies and similar applications. A pair of EKX-15P speakers provides a step up where greater output and stronger full-range music reproduction are required. The larger 15-inch format is useful for bigger parties, weddings, DJs and functions where the main speakers need to deliver more substantial music playback.
The right choice depends on the application rather than simply choosing the speaker with the larger cabinet or higher specification. A corporate presentation may not benefit from a larger speaker in the same way a dance-floor system would, while a music-focused function may need a more capable full-range pair or dedicated subwoofers.
Why We Start With Two Speakers
Audio Hire's conventional PA systems start with two main speakers. A pair allows the system to cover the audience more evenly and provides a predictable left-and-right PA arrangement for the majority of functions we support.
Using two appropriately positioned speakers also makes it easier to distribute sound across the audience without relying on excessive volume from one location. For speech applications, this can improve intelligibility, while for music it produces a more balanced listening experience across the room.
If a function needs more capability, the next step is not automatically to add more main speakers. Depending on the requirement, it may make more sense to move to a larger pair, add dedicated subwoofers or introduce additional coverage for a particularly large or difficult space. The important point is to identify what the system actually lacks before adding equipment.
When Subwoofers Become Important
Full-range speakers can reproduce a wide range of music effectively, but DJs, dance floors and live music often benefit from dedicated low-frequency reinforcement. Subwoofers are designed to reproduce those lowest frequencies more effectively than simply asking the main speakers to do everything.
For Audio Hire systems where dedicated subwoofers are appropriate, we start with at least two. The main speakers then handle the broader frequency range and audience coverage while the subwoofers provide the low-frequency weight required for music-focused applications.
This creates a more purposeful upgrade path than simply adding extra full-range speakers whenever more impact is required. If the problem is bass, the solution should address bass. If the problem is coverage, the solution should address coverage. If the system simply needs more clean output, then moving to a larger main pair may be the more appropriate step.
Electro-Voice for Different Applications
Professional PA is not only about loud music. Many Audio Hire bookings are for presentations, conferences, ceremonies, speeches and other applications where the most important requirement is intelligibility. In these situations, the system needs to reproduce voices clearly and distribute them evenly across the audience. Speaker placement, microphone choice and sensible gain structure are at least as important as maximum output.
Parties and weddings can place different demands on the same equipment. A function may begin with background music and speeches, then shift later into a more substantial music application. For that reason, the correct system depends on how the sound will be used across the whole occasion, not just on the first hour of the booking.
DJs and live performers may need more headroom, stronger low-frequency performance and additional equipment such as mixers, microphones, monitors or subwoofers. The advantage of using a consistent Electro-Voice range is that the system can scale while retaining familiar equipment and a predictable setup.
Speaker Choice Is About the Application
A speaker specification should not be treated as a substitute for understanding what the PA needs to do. Wattage alone does not tell you whether a speaker is suitable, and a larger speaker is not automatically the correct choice for every function.
The useful questions are whether the system can cover the intended audience, reproduce the required material clearly, provide enough headroom and, where music is important, deliver the necessary low-frequency performance. Those questions determine whether a pair of ZLX-12 G2 speakers is appropriate, whether a pair of EKX-15P speakers is the better choice, or whether the application calls for a larger system with dedicated subwoofers.
This is also why guest numbers alone are not enough. A 100-person presentation and a 100-person dance party may need very different PA configurations even though the audience size is identical.
Electro-Voice Speaker Hire in Adelaide
Audio Hire uses Electro-Voice as the foundation of its conventional portable PA range because it gives us a consistent set of professional powered speakers that can be configured for different applications without making the hire range unnecessarily complicated.
Customers can choose from compact two-speaker systems, larger 15-inch full-range systems and higher-output configurations with dedicated subwoofers. Microphones, mixers, stands, cables and technical support can then be added according to what the function actually requires.
If you are unsure which Electro-Voice system you need, tell us the venue, approximate audience size and whether the PA is being used for speeches, background music, dancing, a DJ or live performance. We can recommend the appropriate system based on the job rather than asking you to interpret speaker specifications yourself.
